HIAL Sumburgh Airport
Signage upgrades to Sumburgh Airport concourse and departure areas
Objective
To upgrade the signage, make it more noticeable, readable and visually accessible to all passengers and airport users whilst working well with the construction refurbishments and building layout changes that were under way.
During the upgrading of Sumburgh Airport, we were brought in to advise, produce and install a range of safety signage, directional signage and graphics throughout the building. The safety signage had to conform and be produced to UK regulations, while the directional signage had to match existing signs and meet HIAL’s standards.
While most of the signage was to be fitted directly to walls around the airport, some of the signs had to be fixed to, and within, the suspended roof, which added an extra complexity. Privacy graphics for glass was also a requirement.
Process
A site survey was carried out to ascertain the safest way to suspend signs from the roof, along with a walkthrough of the plans to identify any potential issues and plan accordingly.
A combination of aluminium and foam board signs were produced and installation was carried out in phases to coincide with the completion of the renovation works. Included in this was the coordination of an engineering firm to securely fit the rods required for the hanging signage.
In addition to the fitting of the signs, we also applied frosting to the departure lounge doors and overlaid HIAL branding.
Result
