We’ve just produced this academic publication which has been digitally printed as a “print on demand” title. This allows our client to order their required initial print run quantity and then re-order smaller quantities (50-100 copies) should this be required.

Print on demand is becoming a popular service for not only academic books but niche publications, personal literary projects or reprints of old titles that have a limited target market. If you are a budding author with a book that you would like to get printed and would like to test potential sales with a short run publication but are unsure of how the process works, give us a call and we will guide your through the various stages of production.

We’d like to thank the editor of Traversing the Inner Seas for kindly leaving us the following review:

First-rate service by Shetland Times throughout the process of printing our latest monograph“.

Nominated for a Saltire Society Literary Award in the “History book of the Year” 2016 category, key themes within the book focus on how the effects of the war on Shetland were determined by the islands location and how Shetlanders related the war to their local community as well as to themselves and their families. Shetland, the “Old Rock”, had a deep emotional meaning for them.

Over a twenty year period Gladys Amedro designed upwards of twenty patterns inspired and influenced by traditional Shetland Lace knitting.

The Vintage Lace Collection Volume 1, compiled by Jamieson & Smith (Shetland Wool Brokers Ltd) is the beginning of a series of publications to capture the amazing lace work and help promote the best of Real Shetland wool to a worldwide audience.

We are pleased to have been involved in converting the patterns, creating the design, printing and finishing the initial volume. It is anticipated this will be a widely sought after publication and we look forward to starting work on Volume 2.

Originally produced by Lerwick printers T & J Manson in the early 1900’s for author C.E. Mitchell, we are glad to announce the reprint in hardback of Up Helly Aa Tar-barrels & Guizing – looking back  is now available.

The book is an authoritative documented history of Lerwick’s unique annual festival and was “the fruit of painstaking research, of the kind to satisfy the most critical”. Researching old copies our very own Shetland Times newspaper had to take place in the British National Museum in London “owing to destruction by fire in Lerwick” of the archived copies.

Shetland Heritage Publications latest book is a must have for all Up Helly A’ enthusiasts and is available now at the Shetland Museum or HERE.

If you’ve identified a book of local interest you would like see back in print or have a current project you are planning to publish we’d like to hear from you. Contact our publications manager c.black@shetlandtimes.co.uk for an informal chat.

Title: Small Boats of Shetland

Our experience in printing, publishing and distributing books, local publications in particular, is second to none. We understand how important your book is and that you may have many questions to ask before deciding to go to print. Call us to discuss your project and let us provide you with the complete book printing service.

Customer: Centre for Nordic Studies / UHI

Customer Feedback: “The quality of the final product is just excellent, design was just great, the author spent a lot of time on the phone with your designer and she was really impressed by his creativity, speed and technical skills. In terms of product, we really got what we wanted….”.

Size: Books come in many sizes/formats but A5 and A4 are probably most common. This book was a 64pp + paperback cover, A5 landscape format.

Our Recommendation: If your book contains photographic images, this may prove the deciding factor in whether you choose a portrait or landscape format.

Materials: The project benefitted from use of a one sided board for the cover and the inner leaves were printed on a 170gsm silk. This provided the reflective qualities required to further enhance the photographs and afford a pleasant reading experience.

Our Recommendation: Our stock and range of paper and board is continually being updated to incorporate a wide variety to give our customers an extensive choice. Let us guide you towards the most suitable substrate for your project.

Printing: Full colour throughout on our lithographic commercial printing press gives the highest quality results with consistent colour replication.

Our Recommendation: Beware of lower quality digital productions at discounted prices.

Finishing: Gloss laminated covers provide protection and a luxurious finish at an affordable price. We can provide stitched, glued (paperback) or sewn (hardback) spines depending on your needs.

ADD PRINT – ADD POWER to your promotions: PRINT is still the preferred medium for the vast majority of people including the new generation of digital natives. 83% of the 18-23 year olds surveyed believe reading from paper is nicer than reading off a screen. www.printpower.com
