Transport was never really that much of an issue for me until I moved to Shetland. Now – as I suspect must be the case for just about every other person here – it is a really big deal. How we get around, on and off these islands has a significant impact on our lifestyles and our wallets, so it’s not surprising that hardly a
week passes without transport issues making the front pages of The Shetland Times.

In recent times, many of these afore-mentioned column inches have been devoted to lamenting the hugely inflated cost and unreliability of the airlines which provide our “lifeline” link with the mainland. Personally, I find air travel such a frustrating and dehumanising process, that I’d probably plump for the good old North boat even if flights off Shetland were cheap as chips and ran like clockwork.

Just before Christmas I took part in a Radio Shetland Speakeasy. When asked by host Davie Gardner what I thought Shetlanders could do to challenge the prohibitive cost of air travel, I suggested that everyone should take the boat instead. The rest of the panel laughed, and I realised they thought I was joking. I wasn’t. If Shetlanders voted with their feet and opted to travel exclusively by ferry then surely the airline would have to reconsider its exorbitant fares.

So much for travel on and off the island then. How we get around these islands can be just as controversial. I’d ditch my car in a heartbeat if we had better public transport and cycle lanes. And when I say cycle lanes, I don’t mean a pathetic white line painted down the road.

Well, that’s my transport tuppence-worth. Whatever your views are, we’re confident you’ll find something in this issue to inform, interest and entertain. Happy reading.

Welcome to the 38th Shetland Folk Festival…complete with tunes, laughs and some serious sleepless nights!!

We’ve completed the official programme and are excited to see such a great line up once again.

We thoroughly enjoy working with the Folk Festival each year to help them promote their event creating full colour flyers alongside newspaper and magazine and online/social media advertising. As we also print The Shetland Times newspaper every week, our coverage of the event alongside any videos we can capture for our news website, helps provide great all round coverage of the event that has become a staple in many a Shetlanders’, returning tourists’ and music fanatics’, yearly calendar.

Having so many visiting artistes and visitors to our islands join in the fun makes it all the more special. You’ll have a great time at this event and we hope you enjoy the programme and can make time to visit the supporting businesses who have advertised within the programme to help support this fantastic festival.

Our latest publication, “Enjoy Fair Isle Knitting” is launched today at the Shetland Wool Week. We were pleased to have worked with author Chihiro Sato from Tokyo who has created beautiful contemporary designs with colourations inspired by Shetland’s nature and atmosphere.

Having been heavily involved in the project from its inception, designing the layout, amending text that was translated, coordinating the logistics of proof reading to printing and binding the project for the requested launch date, we are glad to now share and make this fine book available to you.

With the author’s deep respect for traditional Shetland patterns gained from many visits to the islands, this collection of 18 projects will allow you to share her love of Fair Isle knitting and make it possible to create hand knitted garments inspired by our islands.

The book is packed with fantastic photos, diagrams, patterns and helpful knitting notes and instructions is available now at shop.shetlandtimes.co.uk

We hope you do all enjoy Fair Isle knitting.

We’ve just produced this academic publication which has been digitally printed as a “print on demand” title. This allows our client to order their required initial print run quantity and then re-order smaller quantities (50-100 copies) should this be required.

Print on demand is becoming a popular service for not only academic books but niche publications, personal literary projects or reprints of old titles that have a limited target market. If you are a budding author with a book that you would like to get printed and would like to test potential sales with a short run publication but are unsure of how the process works, give us a call and we will guide your through the various stages of production.

We’d like to thank the editor of Traversing the Inner Seas for kindly leaving us the following review:

First-rate service by Shetland Times throughout the process of printing our latest monograph“.

Nominated for a Saltire Society Literary Award in the “History book of the Year” 2016 category, key themes within the book focus on how the effects of the war on Shetland were determined by the islands location and how Shetlanders related the war to their local community as well as to themselves and their families. Shetland, the “Old Rock”, had a deep emotional meaning for them.

If you are interested in finding out more about this title, it’s available at http://www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/shop/history/index4.htmlbody-graphic
